“Each of my three novels are set in full, or in part, in the
fictitious landscape of Baldoon County, inspired by the region of
Chatham-Kent where I was born and raised. My uncle, Dennis Loyer, took
these shots for me, capturing representations of Addy Shadd’s
first home in Rush Home Road, the dilapidated farm house where Rose and
Ruby Darlen lived, and the small rural home of Mary Gooch from The
Wife’s Tale, among other images that will feel familiar to
readers.”

“Photographer Laura Starks took these shots after reading my
latest book, portraying both the suburban and rural landscapes of the
western San Fernando Valley that appear in The Wife’s Tale.
There’s the big Dodge Ram that Mary Gooch drives around in. The
sunset takes my breath away. Although my family and I have lived here in
‘Golden Hills’ for three years now, the place still feels
strange and new.”

“Perhaps you’re as intrigued as I am to see how different
markets around the world interpret the novels for their readers. My
second book, The Girls, the story of conjoined twins, was especially
challenging to art departments. The covers are obviously not to be taken
literally.”

“These shots were taken by my photographer friend Laura Starks
in the spring of 2009, in and around my home in a southern California
Canyon. My husband and I moved here after having spent 25 years in the
urban environment of downtown Toronto and this rural location was a huge
change for us. It’s a beautiful place to live, and a quiet,
soulful place for a writer to work. Most of the neighbors have horses
and my children love to go for evening walks with a pocketful of
carrots.”
